The Contest - ROUGH HEAT. The waves were huge and coming in strong. There was
a wicked side current. I had been successful on the previous two days by just
getting out as fast as possible and then going back against the current. That
was a bad strategy during that heat. By the time I got out beyond the
breakers, I was way out of the contest area, down by the surfers! I started to
motor hard to get back up towards the pier. The current was still strong, and
then a huge set came in. I was just in front of them where the maximum churn
is. Huge breath, dive as deep as you can, come up through the churn and then
take another huge breath. The third wave was smaller. Sigh. I am tired and
time has gone by. By the time I got in, the next heat was already out. Also, I
forgot to put in my ear plugs, so I had to stop and do that (30 seconds out
of 15 minutes). The speedos have no pocket, so I just tucked them into the
bottoms at the thigh.
